October seven was the start flora sale of the flavour at the
UC Davis Arboretum Teachning Nursery. I had printed out the flora listing from
their spider web site in addition to then I knew what to expect. (Their flora listing is really handy because it contains non solely brief information close each flora but equally good the aisle inwards the plant nursery where to discovery it, the price, in addition to how many are inwards stock.)
I was thrilled to run into that the flora sale inventory contained a release of novel mangaves from
mangave bounty with me before inwards the year, but at that spot were roughly others I didn't have. I'm making a bold prediction correct hither in addition to now: 2018 volition the the twelvemonth of the mangave! Many of these novel hybrids volition discovery their agency into nurseries and, hopefully, into customers' gardens. Look for a dedicated mangave transportation soon.

×Mangave 'Man of Steel', a hybrid between Agave striata in addition to ×Mangave 'Bloodspot' |

×Mangave 'Pineapple Express', a hybrid between Manfreda guttata Jaguar' in addition to ×Mangave 'Bloodspot' |
×Mangave 'Macho Mocha', ane of the start mangaves on the market. It's a natural hybrid betwixt Agave mitis in addition to an unknown Manfreda, collected inwards Mexico. |
Manfreda undulata 'Mint Chocolate Chip', a selection selection of Manfreda undulata 'Chocolate Chip' |
Manfreda guttata 'Jaguar' |
The selection of agaves was really overnice equally well:
Agave bracteosa 'Monterrey Frost' |
Agave 'Desert Diamond, a sport of Agave 'Kissho Kan' |
Agave xylonacantha 'Frostbite' |
Agave ×romanii 'Shadow Dancer', a hybrid between Agave filifera in addition to Agave mitis var. albidior |
Agave filifera |
Dozens upon dozens of Agave ovatifolia 'Frosty Blue', both inwards 4" in addition to 1 gallon sizes |
Agave ovatifolia 'Frosty Blue' |
Agave americana 'Striata' |
The aloe selection was comparatively small:
Aloe ×spinosissima (left), Aloe grandidentata (right). They equally good had 'Estrella del Mar' in addition to 'Daniel'. |
In comparison, the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory tables at the far terminate of the plant nursery had a far richer selelection of aloes. These were the same plants equally inwards the
pre-sale on Friday where I bought seven minor aloes (both species in addition to hybrids).
Here are a few other succulents that caught my oculus (these are Teaching Nursery plants, non Botanical Conservatory plants--I know, it's confusing, but they are 2 carve upward entitities selling at the same sale):
Not a big selection of echeverias... |
...but this was ane I'd never seen, 'Ghost Buster' |
Echeveria 'Imbricata' is quite common, but there's a skilful argue for that: it's beautiful in addition to it handles our summertime oestrus meliorate than other echeverias |
I haven't been growing hylotelephiums (the taller fall-blooming 'Autumn Joy'-type sedums) inwards a release of years because I don't discovery them all that attractive when non inwards flower. But evidently at that spot are a release of novel cultivars amongst variegated in addition to fifty-fifty regal leaf that powerfulness brand me alter my mind:
Hylotelephium spectabile 'Hot Stuff' |
Hylotelephium telephium 'Autumn Charm' |
Hylotelephium telephium 'Frosted Fire' |
Hylotelephium telephium 'Touchdown Teak'; I've never seen ane amongst regal leaf before |
As always, the sale featured a goodful handful of selection manzanita selections, including 2 cultivars of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the smallest fellow member of the genus: 'Radiant' in addition to 'Wood's Compact'. I bought 'Wood's Compact' (only 8" inwards height) for the backyard because it's said to endure the most shade-tolerant of all manzanitas.
Arctostaphylos densiflora 'Howard McMinn' |
I'm non currently inwards an ornamental grass phase, but when I saw this, I was wishing I'd accept room for some:
Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Pink Cloud' |
This flora caught my oculus on my concluding exceed through the nursery: Trichostema lanatum. I had never heard of it before, but it's a 2×3 ft. shrub native to the coastal ranges of Southern California. Its mutual cry is blueish whorls--it's tardily to run into why.
Trichostema lanatum. I did roughly research, in addition to it's ane of the those California natives that desire really niggling to no supplemental H2O afterwards they are established. In fact, the most mutual crusade of cash inwards one's chips inwards abode gardens is H2O inwards the summer. I'm tempted to endeavor it inwards a hot spot exterior the front end yard fence. |
And hither is my flora haul:
- ×Mangave ‘Lavender Lady’
- ×Mangave ‘Man of Steel’
- ×Mangave ‘Mission to Mars’
- Agave ‘Shadow Dancer’ (2x)
- Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ‘Wood's Compact’
- Callistemon viminalis ‘Slim’
- Cotinus coggygria ‘Winecraft Black’, a novel dwarf smokebush that retains its regal coloring all summer
- Eremophila glabra ‘Grey Horizon’
I'm particulary excited close these two: ×Mangave 'Mission to Mars' in addition to ×Mangave 'Lavender Lady'.
I’ll speak to a greater extent than close my purchases equally I set them inwards the ground.
